SWAG met James Galea, better known as JamezG, and got the scoop on what he's been up to. Having recently performed at the popular Gozo carnival and with a DJ residency at Bacco's, Jamez is going places.

When and why did you get into music and DJing?

I’ve always been into music since I was just a little kid. When I was roughly 15 or 16, the opportunity to take some DJ lessons with Joseph Armani came along and I couldn't refuse. The rest is history.

Who are your favourite artists?

My favourite artist has to be Marco Carola. In my opinion he’s one of the best underground DJs the world has ever seen. The way he plays with all his effects and music selection is second to none. Only a handful of underground DJs can create the kind of emotion he can produce when behind the decks. Obviously, there are more DJs that I follow like Jamie Jones, Matthias Tanzmann, Davide Squillace and much more.

Tell us about your shows and the clubs you perform at.

The Gozo Carnival Special was a huge success and it was my first party on our sister island. At the moment I have my residency at Bacco which is going from strength to strength. I have a few confirmed gigs abroad: the first one being at Empire in Middlesbrough on Easter Saturday. Obviously summer is just around the corner so we're planning something big just along the same lines as Bacco Sundays.

Do you have a job apart from music?

I work with my father's printing company, but apart from that I'm a full-time DJ. Since I’m my own boss in a way, I’ve got a lot of time for myself, so I don't find any conflict between the job and music.

Tell us about your latest project.

At the moment I'm collaborating on some remixes and tracks with my good friend Lee Pennington from Riffraff UK. I'm also working on a few side projects, such as collaborating with a couple of well known Maltese artists and singers. 2015 looks like it’s going to be an interesting, busy year.

How big is the market for your kind of music?

I don't think it’s as big as EDM and Commercial, but it’s improved drastically in the last couple of years. I think my kind of music interests a sophisticated kind of people who are there for the love and feeling of music rather than just going out for the sake of it. I really believe that Underground music will conquer the world in the next couple of years.

What has been the biggest event you have been involved in?

I’ve played at a lot of huge events in Malta but I always seemed to do warm up acts so I can't say it was a huge satisfaction when you're only playing for handful of people. But as I said before, I have my residency at Bacco and we're attracting an average of 500 people every Sunday. Having said that, I can't forget the huge party I was involved in at the world renowned The Egg in London, having played the closing set right after Adana Twins and David August!

So you've met and worked with top names...

I had the pleasure to meet with a lot of artists in Malta and abroad. I've been so lucky that I had an opportunity to work with some of them as well. From my experience I haven't had any awkward encounters with DJs since we were happy in each other’s company, sharing ideas and past experiences. We're all in it for the love of music.

What would you say is one thing that hypes up any crowd?

Has to be a classic track that gets the blood pumping.

What’s the fastest way to lose a dancefloor?

A power cut and obviously when police crash the party!

What have been your best and worst moments performing so far?

This scene has a lot of ups and downs. You just need to stay to your true self and people will respond to that. You certainly can't please everyone.

Where will you perform next?

As I mentioned I have my weekly residency at Bacco, which will be going on until April. Then it’s full on preparation for the summer.
