MICHAEL CINI, better known as Mykill, is the founder of Whysoserious events and a resident DJ at Sunglasses at Night and G7 events, so he definitely knows his way around the local music scene - but he doesn't stop there. With various DJ gigs abroad, Mykill's making quite a name for himself.

When and why did you get into music and DJing?

I used to play keyboards as a teen then evolved to playing the electric guitar in a Punk band in the ‘90s and eventually progressed into DJing in 1999. I’ve always enjoyed the live aspect of it.

Who are your favourite artists?

I listen to a lot of different music and I spent some months living in Ibiza too, so I like a lot of different artists. DJs like Fat Boy Slim, Sam Feldt, The Magician, Swedish House Mafia, MK, Noir and also bands like Sublime, Nirvana, No Snow No Alps and more.

Tell us about your shows and the clubs you perform at.

I play every Friday at my residency at Whysoserious at Shadow Lounge and every Sunday afternoon at Tex Mex. Since I’m also a resident DJ for Sunglasses at Night and G7 events, I get to play all the big clubs too. Apart from playing at national events like Isle of MTV, I’m also lucky enough to get to play abroad every couple of months at big events in countries like Slovakia, Prague, Italy, Ibiza, Dubai, Netherlands and the Caribbean Islands.

Do you have a job apart from music?

Music takes up all my time, so I’m a full time DJ. When I had other jobs they would always clash, so I decided to do music full time.

Tell us about your shows and the station you're on.

I host two weekend shows on XFM100.2, Mykill’s pre-party every Friday from 21:00- 23:30 and House Keeping on Saturdays at the same time. You can hear the podcasts here.

Tell us about the sort of music you produce, how your previous releases have done and what your latest project is.

I have two singles coming out this summer, the first one Deep Inside features Corinna on vocals. It’s a summer chilled out sax anthem and you can preview the music video hereDeep inside will be available in April on Goodear Records, so watch out for a big launch party.

My other single In the Sun features Kurt Calleja on vocals and will be released a bit later on in summer, but it’s by far the best and funkiest thing I’ve ever produced!

How big is the market for your kind of music?

The sky is the limit, I have a lot of energy and there is a lot of demand for good music!

What has been the biggest event you have been involved in?

I was the first DJ to play at the opening of the first Isle of MTV in 2008, and that was massive. There’s also the time I DJed for Pacha in the United Arab Emirates, plus my gigs in Ibiza were special too.

Have you met or worked with any top names?

Yes, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to share the DJ booth with many big names like Martin Garrix, Avicii, The Prodigy, Swedish House Mafia, Sam Feldt, Gamber and Dadoni, Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, Akon, Roger Sanchez, Chicane, Cassius and more.

What would you say is one thing that hypes up any crowd?

I think when the performer is experienced enough to be in control technically, and physically interacts with the crowd using the right tracks and body language, the energy can transform the party in an epic one.

What’s the fastest way to lose a dancefloor?

Playing boring tracks!

What have been your best and worst moments performing so far?

My worst moment was at an event some years ago when I was touring Holland and the promoter accidentally booked a performance at an R’n’B – Latin club.

One of my best moments was playing at Café Del Mar as the sun went down whilst I watched the crowd vibe to the music.

Where will you perform next?

Next I’m off to play at a boat party in Dubai, then I’m back to play for the amazing Sunglasses at Night event in KU Club in Gozo on Saturday 28th February. At the end of March I’m playing for Le Grande House in Slovakia and also on the island of Lipari. You can find the rest of my dates at my site
