GOALKEEPER'S DAY
Yesterday’s breathtaking save off a Neymar header by keeper Francisco Guillermo Ochoa Magaña in the match between Mexico and Brazil was the talk of the town today. The 29-year-old former member of the French Second Division team Ajaccio, who may be on the way to playing in the English Premier League for Arsenal thanks to yesterday’s heroics, has inspired SWAG to celebrate the profession of what is probably the least glamorous figure on the pitch after the match officials. Often mercilessly ridiculed in a way that strikers who miss easy chances aren’t when he makes a mistake, the goalkeeper is a rarely celebrated figure, with Oliver Kahn being the only no. 1 to ever win a World Cup player-of-the-tournament award.
SWAG contacted current Malta custodian Andrew Hogg to tell us what he thought of it all. "Ochoa was definitely the game changer," Hoggy told us. "He was what can only be described as amazing, and just think what that game has done for his career! I had never heard of this guy before, but now he is the most spoken about goalkeeper in the world. Sure, some of his saves last night were lucky, but I always go by the saying ‘you make your own luck’."
So here's to Ochoa, Hogg and all the other goal line sentinels around the world. It's our celebration of acrobatic ability and finely-honed reflexes in a series of tributes to some of our favourite shot-stoppers...
