WAITING IN THE SUN - A BRAND NEW SINGLE FROM MYKILL AND KURT CALLEJA

By The Swag Team   -  August 28, 2015

What happens when two music forces from totally different backgrounds join forces to produce a track together?

Kurt Calleja is an established singer that everyone knows from his super Eurovision performance, while Mykill has been rockin’ dance floors since 1999 with his sets, two talented musicians merging their different styles on their new track Waiting in the Sun.

Not many DJs from Malta can say they performed on the same stage with Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Bob Sinclar, The Prodigy, Sam Feldt, Chicane, Gamber & Dadoni, Fliflac, Klingande, Martin Garrix, LMFAO, Cassius, Roger Sanchez, Filo & Perry, Black Eyed Peas, Pharel Williams, Darude, Lady Gaga, N.E.R.D., Akon, Inna, Maroon 5 and Tribali to crowds of over 45,000 people at one go ... playing international events for world renowned brands like, MTV, Pacha World Tour and the official Café Del Mar and Buddha bar.

For the past 15 years Mykill has established himself as one of Malta’s top DJs, with regular gigs at top clubs locally performing at most major events by G7, Sunglasses at Night and Whysoserious.

On an international level his adventures behind the decks have taken him to play international events exporting his unique DJ sets to Ibiza, the Caribbean island of St Martin, Qatar, Dubai, Austria, Amsterdam, Czech Republic, London, Latvia, Slovakia and Cyprus to name a few.

Mykill started his musical stint as a guitarist and front man in a punk band in the '90s, eventually swapping his electric guitar for a pair of turntables and a mixer. Working hard and putting in the years to finally establishing his name as an original DJ, show man and crowd pleaser.

Always putting on tunes that rock the dance floor surprising the crowd with a mixture of ear friendly tunes and unexpected remixes, dropping in samples, jingles and his trademark microphone antics!

Having a musical background Mykill loves teaming up with musicians in his set. With carefully rehearsed impromptu solos on top of his mixes accompanied by live bongo, jembe/digital drums, saxophone, trumpet, live singers, violin and cello.

That is how Kurt Calleja came into the picture. Best known so far for his ‘wigglyfoot’ representation of his own song This Is The Night in the Eurovision song contest in 2012 in Baku – the same entry that saw Malta back into the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest – Kurt did not sit back, relax and enjoy the flight (a reference he uses since he used to work as a flight attendant back in 2008).

Kurt has taken the time to continue launching songs and material that has given him the opportunity to perform around Europe. Such tracks by the names: Boomerang, Love on Mars, Vertigo, Leap of Faith and Lost In Paradise. Songs released and performed in countries including: London, Sweden, Lithuania, Ukraine, Malaysia, Italy and Austria.

Kurt is also looking forward to performing in Denmark and Portugal later on in 2015 and in India next year, whilst also focusing a lot of his time with his band and to writing and producing/co-producing new material. Such songs have been signed by Italian labels such as Dance&Love and Saifam Records.

Whilst preparing to film Kurt’s otherwise latest music video for the single Vertigo. Kurt met up with Mykill who is the same DJ that can be seen at precisely 01:36 on the same music video and during the creative process – Mykill played a demo to Kurt.

Kurt writes many lyrics on a regular basis however does not write melodies that often. He used lyrics from a song he had written but never released and put them onto this track, which would later on be called: Waiting In The Sun.

The style would be considered a chill, laid back house track. The lyrics speak can be interpreted in two manners.

Version 1: Kurt is seriously in love with a girl and can’t keep his mind off her. So much so that he is still: “Waiting in the sun” for her.

Version 2: The lyrics are sarcastic and whilst the girl is taking her time not being with Kurt – he is waiting in the sun. The same sun associated with summer and partying and having a good time. Which means he has no problem with her taking her time – he is doing his own thing anyway.
