Daryl has been in the local music scene for a while. He started off in 1987, with glam rock outfit Entr’act, following a short spell with Lords of Misrule. He then joined Purple Haze, where he stayed for more than 14 years. Daryl joined new comers Kartridge, before settling with his current Heavy Metal band 12th Ode, with whom he’s due to release an album later on this year. 12th Ode are also competing in this year’s Hard Rock Rising being held at Hard Rock Café this April.

Daryl diversifies from Heavy Metal and joins Voices every two years and Strummin' every year; two voluntary organisations that raise funds for various beneficiaries through music. ”It’s not an easy task but it’s a way to give something back which I enjoy doing immensely.”

Together with The Creepers’ Patrick Camilleri, Daryl brings together musicians and singers from various bands for this year’s Afterdark series. Don't miss the '80s Rock Special, being held at Hard Rock Café, St Julian's on Saturday 11th April 2015. The live performance will feature a mish-mash of local musicians and singers that will take us back in time for a musical journey to the '80s.

  1. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack

1. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack malta, This is the kind of album that puts Queen in a league of their own in my books. From the gentle 'Lily of the Valley' to the speedy 'Stone Cold Crazy' via the Charleston inspired 'Bring Back That Leroy Brown' and classic hits like 'Killer Queen' and 'Now I’m Here', this is an unbelievable piece of musical masterpiece. Brian playing around with guitar effects on 'Brighton Rock'. Roger’s soulful voice on 'Tenement Funster'  and the majestic 'In the Lap of the Gods' (revisited) …. This is one album I never tire of listening too!

  2. Iron Maiden - Killers

2. Iron Maiden - Killers malta, One (of two) of the first albums I ever bought, and as they say, the first cut is the deepest! Maiden have produced many great albums but this is my favourite because their early style was a combination of rawness and technicality which made their sound unique at that time. A benchmark for all NWOBHM (New Wave of British heavy metal - Ed) bands! Songs like 'Wratchild', 'Murders in the Rue Morgue', 'Killers' and 'Genghis Khan' are all good examples of the excellent early style of Iron Maiden.

  3. Ozzy Osbourne - Speak of the Devil

3. Ozzy Osbourne - Speak of the Devil malta, The other 'first' album ... oh my god! I can still remember the look on my dad’s face when he first heard me trying out my version of Ozzy’s “what am I? crazy!?” I instantly fell in love with Ozzy when I heard this. All the Black Sabbath hits performed live by Ozzy and an awesome trio of musicians, the excellent Rudy Sarzo on bass, Tommy Aldridge killing it on the drums and Brad Gillis on guitar, who had the difficult task to fill in for the recently deceased Randy Rhoads. This is not Ozzy’s best album by far but I still love to hear it to this day.

  4. Kiss - Revenge

4. Kiss - Revenge malta, I’ve been an avid Kiss fan since I was about 15, and Kiss has never been looked upon as a greatest band on the planet by many of my friends! We would argue about this for days! So when Revenge came out, it felt just like that! Revenge! This was Kiss like they’ve never been heard for a long, long time. It's an amazing album. Paul Stanley’s vocal delivery on it was second to none. Kiss have finally delivered a hard hitting album. 'Domino', 'Unholy', 'Heart of Chrome'… I could go on through all the album.

  5. The Beatles - Abbey Road

5. The Beatles - Abbey Road malta, The Beatles complete my holy trinity; Queen, Kiss and The Beatles. I was introduced to them by my dad and his car stereo when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Me and my three brothers would sing our hearts out to all the hits. I discovered this album in later years and it is mesmerizing! Paul Mcartney’s 'Oh Darling' is one hell of a track to try to sing! Something still sounds magical today and of course 'Come Together' is an immortal track. 'Golden Slumbers', 'Carry that Weight' and 'The End' are all truly memorable tracks.

  6. Judas Priest - Painkiller

6. Judas Priest - Painkiller malta, If someone had to ask me what is h eavy m etal , I would just hand him Painkiller and say listen and prepare to be amazed. This is pure heavy metal: loud, thumping drums, guitars from hell and the voice. Rob Halford is truly one of the greatest ever metal vocalists and on this album his is out of this world.

I’ve banned this one from my car because I had the tendancy to step up on my accelerator pedal when the title track came on! Amazing album!

  7. Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know

7. Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know malta, This is basically the reunion of one of the post-Ozzy Black Sabbath line up delivering an excellent album, which sadly was to be Ronnie James Dio’s last. Black Sabbath had been struggling to get back to their best form but this reunion with Dio and new identity worked wonders. This album delivers one awesome track after the other. 'Bible Black' and 'Follow the Tears' are good examples.

  8. Deep Purple - Machine Head

8. Deep Purple - Machine Head malta, Easy pick! Deep Purple’s Machine Head is a monster of hard rockin’ hits. 'Highway Star' my personal favourite track but all of the band shines on this album. This is Purple at their best and its hard to argue with the quality of these guys. Deep Purple hold a special memory for me and my old band mates from Purple Haze! We were their supporting act when they played over here in 1998. So it's hard for me not to include these guys on this list!

  9. Satan - Life Sentence

9. Satan - Life Sentence malta, There has been a flurry of reunions of old NWOBHM bands in these past years and these guys really delivered the goods! What an amazing album and what a voice!! I had to pleasure to see these guys live at very close quarters and they are just as good as on the recording including the awesome voice of Brian Ross.

  10. Whitesnake - Slide It In

10. Whitesnake - Slide It In malta, Not easy to pick out an album from Whitesnake but this one always tickled my fancy. Looking at the track list its not hard to see why! 'Guilty of Love', 'Slow 'n' Easy', 'Love Ain't No Stranger', 'Slide It In' ...
