HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ABOUT THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR?

As part of its commitment to bringing the best comedies to the Maltese stage, the Mellow Drama theatre company is proud to present the international award-winning black comedy 'The People Next Door', which will be staged at the Blue Box Theatre from this weekend. The comedy was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003 and was the winner of the Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards.

If the events of 11 September 2001 changed everybody's life, someone forgot to tell Nigel.

With his XBox, his TV and his spliff, Nigel's blissfully continues his life of pure idleness; that is, until a maverick policeman on a covert mission puts Nigel back in touch with his estranged brother Karim and into a hot bed of potential terrorist activity at the local mosque.

A delectably witty political farce, 'The People Next Door' is about what happens when someone else's global problem becomes your local one.

Playwright Henry Adam wrote 'The People Next Door' in six weeks at the beginning of the second Gulf War in 2003, at a time when terror suspects were being rounded up in Edinburgh, Scotland. Susan Mansfield in 'The Scotsman' newspaper said that the play struck a chord because it responded to this sort of thing not with ponderous theorizing, but with a healthy dose of cynicism.

"It observes sharply our better-concealed prejudices and does it all with sparkling knockabout humour," she added.

The performances will be held on 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 February with a special offer on opening night with all tickets at 12 Euros.

The production features an all-star cast including Marylu Coppini, Alan Paris and Andre Agius and introduces Matthew Ben Attard. Direction is in the hands of Steve Casaletto.

The play is being staged at Blue Box theatre at M-Space, the arts centre situated opposite Junior College at Msida. Go to www.mellowdrama.com.mt for more details.

The Mellow Drama company has a fantastic track record of producing plays that people really want to see. Apart from the record breaking 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)', they have also staged 'Legally Blonde – The Musical', 'Keeping Up Appearances', 'Yes, Prime Minister', 'God’s Official', 'Gasping', 'My First Time', and the history-making back-to-back hits, 'All The Great Books (Abridged)' and 'The 39 Steps'.
