Millions of people around the world watch the Super Bowl every year, though (probably) not that many in Malta as American Football has never really caught on here. But if you want to give it a go this Sunday, here are 10 things that might entice you to give American sports' biggest showcase a try.

As prone to exaggeration as they are, when our American friends call the Super Bowl “the greatest show on earth”, they’re not entirely wrong. It’s a one-off spectacle unmatched by any other one-day sporting event in the world except for the World Cup final and the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies - but they hardly count as sports do they?

Everyone wants a piece – two halfway-line tickets will cost you around $10,000 (€8,881) on eBay and advertisers will pay over $2 million (€1.76m) for a 30-second advert during the broadcast. The host city stands to make around $370m (€363m), and Janet Jackson will get her nipple out for free to be part of the half-time show.

Here are some other facts you may not know about American football’s showpiece.

- Eating plays a big part in Super Bowl Sunday – Americans will consume around 17,962,257kgs of avocados in their guacamole and around 18,500 tons of crisps and popcorn.

- In the build-up, their equivelant of Lidl, Wall-Mart, will sell enough frozen pizzas to stretch 480km and enough hot dogs to stretch from San Francisco to Washington.

- There are consequences though; more toilets are flushed during Super Bowl half-time than at any other time of the year; sales of indigestion remedies go up by 20%; and over 17.5 million American workers phone in sick the day after the game.

- The 10 most-watched American TV broadcasts of all time are Super Bowls except for one - the final episode of M*A*S*H in 1983. Last year's Super Bowl is the most watched American TV broadcast in history with 111.5 million viewers.

- The game is also broadcast around the world in 27 languages, reaching more than 800 million viewers. Italian TV will be showing it on Fox Sports 2 and Italia Uno HD. The pre-game show starts at midnight, while the game proper kicks off at 12:30am. It's expected to last four hours.

- The teams participating this year are the American Football Conference champions the New England Patriots and the National Football Conference champions the Seattle Seahawks. The winner will be declared the National League Football Champion for the 2014 season. Here's a beginners' guide to the rules of the game to get you into the spirit. If that's too complicated there's a simpler one here. You can also check out the clip below for a humorous look at the sport. - Californian Rich Gonzalez swapped his Harley Davidson motrobike for two tickets to Super Bowl XXXVII, only to see his favourite team, the Raiders, lose. Jay Snyder of Illinois ate a $100 bill (€88) in a competition to get to the game in 2000. A fan once forced his body into 900kgs of manure to win tickets to Super Bowl XXX.

- National anthem singers prior to the game have included Luther Vandross, Cher, the Backstreet Boys, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Barry Manilow. This year the pre-game singers will include Idina Menzel and John Legend, while Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz will perform at the famous half-time show.

- Among the stars who’ve appeared in the half-time show in the past are U2, Nelly, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, James Brown and Phil Collins. Last year, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers teamed up for a memorable performance.

- In retrospect, 1993’s Super Bowl was memorable for the wrong reasons. Michael Jackson did the half-time show… with 3,500 children. And OJ Simpson performed the pre-match coin toss.
