After months of speculation and trials at various clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal, Norwegian teenage sensation Martin Odegaard signed for Real Madrid last week, where he is expected to earn around 50,000 euros per week as an initial salary.

SWAG presents a clip of the boy's finest moments so far, moments which caught the attention of football's top European clubs and which led to last week's signing. The Norwegian had travelled to Malta last October as part of the national team that faced Malta in a European Championship qualifier, but had remained on the substitutes bench on the day. Malta will travel to Norway on 10 October this year for the second encounter between the two nations, although the fact that Norway beat us 3-0 last year without the prodigy's services, the chances are they will feel they will again non't need him to secure a victory on the day.

Ironically Norway was the country where our own star player, Michael Mifsud, honed his skills in his early 20s, making a name for himself at Lillestrom FC and attracting much interest from more competitive leagues. Unfortunately we never had the pleasure of seeing him turn out for a big name club, although he will forever be remembered for the two goals he scored for Championship side Coventry against the mighty Manchester United in a League Cup encounter.

Having witnesses some promising and ambitious up and coming local players in the UEFA U-17 tournament held here last year, the staff at SWAG is holding its collective fingers crossed hoping that one of that generation of players finally takes Malta's name into the Serie A, Premiership, La Liga or the Bundesliga.

Although some Maltese players have played top level football in leagues in Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Cyprus, Australia and the USA, local football fans, particularly kids, are still waiting for that exceptional player who they can cheer for on television every weekend while watching their favourite teams...
