The way you drive your car can dramatically alter the kilometres per gallon rating (KPG) it achieves. This isn’t about driving like a nannu to save a few cents, it's about a lifestyle change to save lots of money in the long run and also help save the planet. According to the British Automobile Association, for a medium-size car on a 100-km run, the tips below will cut consumption by 32%, saving about €7 on that one trip.

1. Check your tyre pressures and make sure they are inflated to the correct level. Under-inflated tyres can increase consumption by up to 8%. And always keep your engine oil level filled to the correct level with the correct, and clean, type of oil.

2. Turn off the air-con when it’s not needed. In a small car at 48kph this will typically improve economy by 7.2kpg. Similarly, the power needed to run a heated rear windscreen can raise consumption by 5%.

3. Drive smoothly – double the distance between you and the car in front so you have to brake less often. Try to maintain as constant a speed as safely possible and keep in as high a gear as possible without letting the engine labour. This can cut consumption by 10%.

4. Remove the roof rack if you are not using it. This may be obvious, but you may be surprised at the difference it can make. On a small car at 80kph an empty rack can increase consumption by over 6.4kpg.

5. Keep the windows and the sunroof shut when not needed – use air vents instead. This can improve consumption by around 4kpg (again in a small car at 80kph).

6. Turn off the engine during long stops, such as when facing a long wait at the Msida traffic lights.

7. In SUVs, turn off the four-wheel drive system if possible – it uses around 4% more fuel than two-wheel drive.

8. Weight is the most important factor, so remove unnecessary junk from the boot.
