My Own Ink's Branton Barbara let SWAG in on how he got his start in the tattoo industry. Tattooing professionally since 2011, Branton has honed his skills and uses his talents to do what he loves most.

How long have you been tattooing?

I have been tattooing for three years now. I got my licence in 2011 after I had started training in 2008.

Are there any artists or tattooists that have influenced you?

Mike DeVries is the foreign artist that I really admire because he is very young and knowledgeable. The best tattoos he does are realistic colour tattoos.

Do you have a style of tattoo that you prefer to do?

I like doing Japanese tattoos and portraits, but I’ll be happy and work hard to make the client satisfied with whatever they request.

What was the first tattoo you ever did?

My first tattoo was a star on my own hand. My style has definitely changed, as time gives you lessons. I was 20 years old and I did it at the studio that I was training at. I was happy with my work at the time, as it was my first tattoo.

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business?

At first I think that it was a bit of a shock for them. They knew that I had the talent to draw, but never thought of me being a tattoo artist. Now I find that my family members and friends are all very supportive.

Are you interested in other forms of art?

Yes, I try to make the most of my free time, drawing on canvas either in pencil, acrylic or watercolour.

When did you open your studio and what has the experience been like?

I opened it in 2012 and I’m a part-time tattoo artist, but I’m considering doing it full-time. I find that not every part of the year is too busy, as every job has its ups and downs. My Own Ink Tattoo Studio is the dream that I’ve always had, and I really love my job.

What would you say is your favourite part of the job?

Everything that goes into the creation of a tattoo is different and rewarding -I’m satisfied when I see the end result, but I have to say; one of my favourite parts is when I start shading.

If you weren’t a tattooist, what do you think you’d be doing?

I'd probably be a sales person.

What would you recommend to someone wishing to get into the tattoo industry?

The only thing I can recommend is to work hard.

Did you take part in the Malta Tattoo Expo 2014?

I did and it was amazing, it couldn’t have been better. I was really happy, and even placed third in the Best Colour Tattoo Convention section.
