The festive season means that you’re going to be invited to lots of events, which means you're going to need to dress up. Christmas family lunches, get-togethers with friends, staff parties, the obligatory New Year’s Eve party and everything in between. But SWAG's here to give you a few basic tips on how to make sure you'll looking your best. Remember, it shouldn't be about being trendy, but about developing a classic, timeless style.

1. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SHOES

Surprising amounts of people will look at your shoes, so don’t mess up a great suit with an old fashioned, worn out pair. Invest in a classic pair of comfortable, smart footwear and you can’t go wrong. And make sure they're at least clean, if not polished and shiny.

2. PULL DOWN YOUR TROUSERS…

No, we’re not talking about flashing your privates at anyone. However, trousers pulled up to your nipples is never a good look, especially if you’re under the age of 70.

3. …PULL UP YOUR TROUSERS

In addition to the previous point, wearing trousers too low isn’t good either. No one wants to see your boxers. Invest in a decent belt. Braces are debatable... a bit too Lou Bondi-ish to really cut it in this day and age.

4. HIDE THE MOOBS

For those of you not in the loop with today’s hip kids, moobs are ‘man boobs’. Some men can’t help but have a little extra meat around their chest. To avoid this, do yourself a favour and don’t wear clothes made of fitted fabrics.

5. UPDATE YOUR EYEWEAR

Glasses frame the face, so make an effort to get a new pair every few years. By ‘few years’ we mean more often than every 10. Spectacles made in 2008 probably aren’t very cool now; and don’t be too stingy – no one likes wonky, stained glasses. Stick to classic colours like black or brown, and avoid loud colours or patterns if you always want to look up-to-date.

6. MATCH YOUR SHOES AND BELT

It might seem like a minor detail, but matching your shoes and belt (and your watch) makes your whole outfit look more put together. Having a nice selection of accessories will make your life easier.

7. WEAR NICE SOCKS

Just like wearing ugly shoes spoils an outfit, so do torn, discoloured, old socks. With socks you can go different ways: classic, matching them to the colour of your shoes or trousers, or extrovert and sporting a touch of bright colour. If you want to be brave, make sure they don’t clash terribly with whatever else you’re wearing.

8. WEAR PROPERLY-FITTING CLOTHES

If you’re wearing clothes that are too big or too small and you’re uncomfortable, people are going to notice. Wearing a well-fitted outfit is one of the best things you can do for yourself because they make the most of what you’ve got.

9. LISTEN TO YOUR PARTNER OR FRIEND

If you’re about to go out and your partner or friend gives you a ‘is that what you’re wearing?’ look, take their advice seriously because most probably other people will think the same thing... and standing out for the wrong reasons is rarely good, unless you're oozing with enough confidence to want to look different and get away with it.

10. TONE DOWN THE AFTERSHAVE

People will not appreciate smelling you before you enter a room… or after you’ve left it. A couple of pumps of your favourite aftershave should be enough to leave you smelling fresh. And make sure that your 'favourite' isn't a cheap suoermarket or pharmacy splash on, but invest in something that smells expensive. It really makes a difference.
