SWAG has teamed up with Primo Emporio menswear of Bay Street for a series of interviews with prominent Maltese personalities who are making waves in their field. This week we spoke to SABRINA GRIMA, a popular fitness instructor  and bikini model also known as 'the Insanity Queen' who, in an unusal twist, makes a point for gender equality activists by modelling some Primo Emporio menswear for us.

Hi Sabrina. Tell us a little about yourself to start off.

Hello SWAG! I am 25 and from Mellieha, where I’ve lived all my life so far. My family is made up of four: my mum, dad, and elder sister who means the world to me. What else? I'm currently single and I love the colour yellow.

Yellow? Why is that?

Well, it symbolises light, brightness, optimism, it makes me feel jolly and puts me in a super happy mood, athough it is also considered to be the colour of jealousy and envy. Well, it doesn’t do that to me.

We've only just met and we already feel you're quite a positive person.

Oh yes! My absolute favourite quotes are: “If you can dream it, you can do it," by Walt Disney, and “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I’m possible," by Audrey Hepburn. Oh, and then there's: "The best curve on a woman is her smile,” by Bob Marley...

You're a fitness instructor at Insanity Fitness. Have you always been fit?

I have been a ‘fitness freak’ since I can remember, I was always into athletics, basketball, netball, volleyball, dancing and gymnastics and I used to love sports days at school. I am a very competitive person, and a sore loser too, so maybe that is why I always give 110% in everything I do. Once I do something or start something I have to achieve and crush my limits. That's what Insanity is all about, crushing your fitness limits.

Do you have any idols or role models?

Well, my life idol is Audrey Hepburn. She had the reputation of being a humble, kind and charming person, who lived the philosophy of putting others before herself. She showed this side particularly towards the end of her life in her work for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). A top magazine called her the most beautiful woman of all time, in a poll held in 2006 and she's been ranked as the third greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute. My fitness Idol is Shaun T, who is the master at Insanity and my other life, idol, more important than Audrey Hepburn is my mum, who is the centre of my world.

How many hours a week do you train?

I train six times a week for nearly two hours daily.

So you're super fit, but do you ever indulge in any guilty pleasures?

Ooh I have so many! My favourite ones are my chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc, Applewood cheese and grapes, and the occasional glass of a crisp bubbly.

You've taken part in the international Miss Bikini contest. How did that change your routine?

That was a challenge, my first big fitness challenge I suppose. It was my first time competing, so I was very determined. Thanks to my great coach, Suzanne Borg, I followed a very strict eating regime, together with extra hours of training. I spent hours in front of the mirror ‘shoulders back, abs flexed, with a broad smile' and took enormous amounts of pictures to find my best pose.

What motivated you as such to enter such a competition?

I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. Sometimes we all get moments when we don’t feel we are doing enough… we tend to get to a point in life, were we say… what’s the buzz? You need a new push, a challenge… to go up the next step of the ladder of achieved dreams.

I had wanted to enter such a competition for a while, but always backed out, but when I was approached this time I decided to give it a go, thanks to the support of my family, friends and Insaniacs. I said I had to do it and I did!

Do you think your kind of fitness-oriented lifestyle is appreciated or understood by the general public?

I think that in Malta, athletes, the real athletes, those who dedicate their lives to bodybuilding and other types of fitness lifestyles, are not given the merit they should. People who are into fitness are so dedicated, and strict with themselves... one has to give up most of the pleasures of life. I think such people are just like other life motivators and leaders but they are not given the appreciation or support they deserve.

Do you believe that you stand for something?

I stand for all the ‘girls next door’ who are left alone during their school breaks, the young people who are being bullied and the people who are bigger in size and feel they are neglected in society. I want to be a voice for them. I have already started slowly and am taking baby steps to change beliefs in this society we live in. I get the daughters of some of my Insaniacs coming up to me and telling me: "Sabrina I want to be like you!" I get adults from all walks of life, different nationalities and religions, telling me what an inspiration and great motivator I am and that is the greatest achievement of all. I am happy to be an image of health, fitness and happiness.

Apart from your job motivating people to be fit, you also have an office job don't you?

Yes and I love it. I love the constant pressure, phones ringing, papers everywhere, piles of invoicing to be done. In my job I get to visit oil rigs, cruise liners and navy ships and my bosses are amazing too. So if I had to start over, I would definitely go into shipping again.

Finally, if you could describe yourself in just three words what would they be?

I would say: honest, bubbly and... 'an explosion of energy'!
