We all know that Malta and Gozo have served as the backdrop to many films in recent years, from 'Munich' to 'World War Z' and from 'Troy' to 'Gladiator'. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are here at the moment making another one, while it was recently reported that three other high profile productions were filming here simoultaneously. But the history of making films in Malta actually goes back to the year 1925.

Sometimes the islands have played themselves and served an intricate part in the plot, as in the movies 'Malta Story', 'Black Eagle', 'Trenchcoat' and 'Mackintosh Man'; other times the wide variety of magnificent architecture, landscapes and beautiful beaches masqueraded as a foreign city, as in the case of 'Midnight Express'. The islands' magical quality even led to them standing in for fantastic lands in far off fantasy realms, as in 'Popeye'.

SWAG has brought together a collection of classic movie trailers and clips from some of these old movies that were filmed in Malta before the 'Gladiator' era. We've left some notable ones out, such as 'Shout at the Devil', 'Raise the Titanic' and 'Sweeney 2' simply because the footage available on Youtube doesn't feature clear, recognisable shots of Malta and thus doesn't evoke the same sense of curiosity and wonder at how the local landscapes have changed since the time the films were made. We've also included one clip from a popular '80s TV cop show called 'Remington Steele', as Malta was also used as an exotic location for TV series as well as films.

We've also included the trailer to a French-produced film released in 2011 called 'Le Cochon de Gaza' to show that many other countries have also filmed their movies here, not just Britain and the US.

Enjoy this clipathon that features Hollywood and British movie greats such as Alec Guinness, Paul Newman, Mickey Rooney, Roger Moore, Michael Caine, Robin Williams and Pierce Brosnan as well as notable others such as Robert Hays ('Airplane'), Margot Kidder (Superman's Lois Laine in the first four movies), Jean Claude van Damme (who plays a baddie in his first ever movie) and child star (and close friend of Michael Jackson) Mark Lester.
