TAZ GARDNER of TGM Photography tells SWAG about what inspires his art, how he started off using a disposable camera, and about two exciting, current projects before sharing the shots he is most of proud of so far.

Tell us a bit about how you ended up being the photographer you are today.

I had a normal education like most, but had a passion for art and design going through secondary school that carried on to college. This developed in to a love of photography. I found photography the perfect way to show the world what my eyes see and how I perceive the world rather than seeing it through the blinkered views of others.

Do you make a good living out of photography?

If by good living you mean am I busy with work then yes there is a waiting list. Is it making me a rich man? No, but then that’s not the reason why I am a photographer and never will be. I think the day I do it just for money will be the day I stop. Obviously there are costs involved and future projects to fund but it’s not about the money for me.

Are there any photographers that you try to emulate?

Two photographers that I personally admire are Chase Jarvis for his creativity and his mixed media, and, of late, Benjamin von Wong. His captures are just mind blowing and very inspirational, pushing everything to the limit.

What is the latest news from your career?

I’m working on two projects in my sparse spare time at the moment that I’m really excited about. The first is a very personal one entitled ‘We all have something hidden within’ and I’m very fortunate to bring this to life in a character called Racahaos, with the help of the very talented Louie Noir from Cirque Malta. The other one is where I’m bringing the alternative scene in to new light and showing it in its beauty rather than some taboo or dark subject. This is a new direction that I’m taking my photography in and have wanted to do for quite some time.

With regards to equipment, what’s your advice to aspiring photographers?

I will start by quoting Chase Jarvis - "The best camera is the one that's with you." This is because it’s not always about the equipment; it is about capturing the moment, story or feeling of emotion. I always suggest borrowing a camera from a friend and then starting out small, there is no need to spend thousands of euros at first. Experiment as much as you can, break the rule of thirds, put your spin on it and most of all do what makes you happy. Just because it might not conform to other people’s standards it does not make it wrong… after all photography is a very personal thing. I love to be different, in fact I’m proud to be different. My vision might not be the same as yours but that's because I see the world differently. First and foremost I’m an artist and have no reason to conform to anything or just to fit in: only to recreate how I see the world and express my feelings through photography.
