TOP 10 MOVIE MONSTERS OF THE 70S AND 80S
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the release of the classic horror film Nightmare on Elm Street, SWAG has brought togther the 10 monsters that dominated our bad dreams as children growing up in the two decades where scary movie monsters were somewhere in between the unbelievably clunky, stop-motion creatures of 50s and 60s B-movies, and the you-have-to-see-to-believe realism digital revolution that took off in the 90s with such films as Jurassic Park.
We stayed away from monsters such as the Gremlins or the Critters as they were stars of movies people already knew were comedy-horror productions... we believe the monsters we chose genuinely offered moments of terror and provoked flashbacks and nightmares long after we laid eyes on them for the first time.
Do you agree with our choice, or was there a 'favourite' monster of yours we left out? Tell us in the comments section below; meanwhile, if you like horror movies, you may want to check out this event, taking place appropriately enough, on Friday night.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 30TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT
Euro Media Forum and Vintage Boutique, present A Nightmare on Elm Street 30th anniversary event at The Sofa Cinema at University Msida Campus on Friday 22 August at 8.30 p.m.
Celebrating 30 years this year, A Nightmare on Elm Street, directed by Wes Craven is one of the most intelligent and terrifying horror films of the 1980s and introduced the world to Freddy Krueger (Richard Englund) the horribly scarred man with the ragged slouch hat and the iconic metal gloves with knives at the tips.
Guest Speaker Dr Krista Bonello Rutter Giappone will lead the audience into a greater appreciation for this horror film, how this film intelligently probes into the audience’s terror of nightmares and combines it with another horrific element – the very real fear of killers roaming around one’s own street. Dr Bonello Rutter Giappone will give an interesting insight into how this film at its time of release brought hope to fans of the genre in an era in which the horror film had become little more than a mindless exercise in gratuitous high tech blood-letting.
The audience is invited to participate and put forward to the guest speaker their questions, curiosities and observations. To spice up the evening there will also be a Nightmare on Elm Street film quiz, with the opportunity to win cinema tickets and a free pizza meal for two. So quiz participants must keep their eyes open for Freddy Krueger’s deadly clues! The film discussion is being done in collaboration with Vintage Boutique (Savoy Arcade, Valletta), Ghost Squad, Giotto restaurant and Eden Cinemas.
Price is 5 euros per person including wine, food and unlimited popcorn. Limited seating is available. For bookings please e-mail euromediaforum@gmail.com or send an sms to 9905 2482, or log in http://www.facebook.com/Euro.Media.Forum
