SWAG salutes the sadly departed comedy legend Robin Williams, who was found dead at his home at the age of 63 on August 11. Although Popeye was not a success, it was his first ever film role and we offer here a clip from it since it represents his Maltese connection. The production was filmed here in 1980. Indeed, Popeye Village is actually the film set from that movie. RIP to a brilliant comic actor who made all of us here at SWAG laugh whether he was playing an alien from the planet Ork or a singing and dancing nanny - with some fine, oscar-winning serious performances thrown in for good measure.

SWAG spoke to Narcy Calamatta, who worked with Robin Williams during the filming of Popeye. We asked him if he had any fond memories of the late comedy legend.

“When Robin Williams was in Malta filming Popeye, there was a conflict with the Director, Robert Altman. I wanted to keep Popeye Village as a tourist attraction, but Robert Altman didn’t trust me. He told me I wanted to use it for another film, but I insisted I was looking forward to a Popeye 2.

The day Robin Williams was leaving Malta, I went to the airport to bid him farewell and as he hugged me goodbye, he whispered ‘don’t let them pull down the village’. He too hoped for a Popeye 2. I spoke to the head of production at Disney about this, but since they weren’t happy with the outcome of the first film, a Popeye 2 wasn’t happening. From that day I opened Popeye Village as a tourist attraction, and 35 years later it’s still there commemorating the talent of Robin Williams.”
