SARAH NAUDI RETURNS TO PORN

There. We knew the headline would draw you in you filthy-minded beast. It is in fact true that the delectable, London-based actress is returning to Porn… but it’s the revival of Porn - the Musical, the show in which she starred that took Malta – and the Edinburgh Festival – by storm circa five years ago. SWAG spoke to Sarah about the show and the other highlights of her career so far.

It’s been an exciting journey for 24-year-old Sarah Naudi so far. Her first claim to fame was probaly representing Malta at the Junior Eurivision Contest with the unimaginately titled group Youth Talent Team, but she followed that with a relocation to London to study drama aged 15.

“I went to two top musical theatre schools and graduated two years ago with a BA in Acting,” she explained during a break from rehearsals. “Since then I’ve been trying to focus mainly on British TV and film productions, but I make sure to stay in touch with what’s happening in Malta as I see loads of opportunities popping up here all the time.”

Indeed, Sarah has been back numerous times to perform, including in the video for the Red Electrick song The Runaway last summer (see the video below). This summer she’s rejoing the original Edinburgh Festival cast of Porn the Musical for three performances at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta later this month.

In case you’ve forgotten, Sarah plays Sanddy – with a double ‘D’.

This isn’t the first musical she’s been involved in this year. The popular American hip-hop and salsa musical In the Heights, a story based on the adventures of Dominican-Americans in Washington that has been around since 2005 and has been compared to West Side Story, made its London debut at Southwark Playhouse in May, and Sarah was in it.

“A fellow Maltese actor, Damian Buhagiar, and I got cast in supporting roles. I hadn’t done a musical since college and this was on another level to anything I’d experienced before. The production got nominated for six awards, had packed houses and standing ovations every night. Although it was a mostly a Latino show, Damian and I made sure to bring a Maltese flavour to it,” she told SWAG.

If you’re into foreign language films you might also get a glimpse of Sarah in a recent hit French film called Quantum Love, which starred two household names in France.

“My mother is French and I speak the language fluently so I also try to audition and take part in French projects. Last year I filmed a small role in the most recent Sophie Marceau and Francois Cluzet film… being on a film set was fun and I felt quite at home…”

SWAG looked the film up and discovered Sarah’s name in the credits – and not too far down the list either. Cool!

We asked Sarah about who or what inspired her to pursue a life in performance.

“People that inspire tend not to be performers as such but people who have overcome difficulty in their life. I am a huge sucker for sports motivation quotes and films and I have them on repeat on my iPod. Things like: ‘I’m gonna show you how great I am.’

“As for acting, Angelina Jolie is my biggest inspiration not only for her talent as an actress in all genres but also with what she does with her success and what she stands for.”

Finally, in keeping with SWAG tradition, we asked Sarah about her taste in men.

“My ideal man is very into sports and extremely ambitious. Someone who intrigues me and makes me think twice about things I was sure of before… and I think I found him already,” she smiled.

“As for the perfect date, it would be at a fun park or bungee jumping or something mad like that. Something you’ll never forget. Spontaneity is best and you know it’s a good date when you can totally be yourself.”

And with that she returns to rehearsals for the show that features such classic tunes as I’ve got a PHD (Pretty Hard D**k), Naked on a Sunday and Where the F**k is Malta. Shows are on 22, 23 and 24 August – tickets from here. Follow Sarah’s news on her website here.
