A recent British survey found that a substantial amount of people believe men shouldn't grow a goatee after the age of 34; that 31 is the maximum age for getting a tattoo, and that it is inappropriate for women to wear a bikini over the age of 48. Well these opinions smacked of ageism to SWAG and we decided to ask some men and women we like and who are all 30 or over, what they think of the survey's findings.

EDWARD MERCIECA - Actor and Teacher

EDWARD MERCIECA - Actor and Teacher malta, I hate it when people say what people should or shouldn't do. I know women way over the age of 50 who look great in a bikini. I know men over 50 who look cool with a goatie and I think some tattoos look good at whatever age. Likewise, there are much younger women, teenagers even, who look awful in a bikini, and the same goes for some younger men with goaties or some younger people with tattoos. Ultimately it all depends on how the individual feels. If they are comfortable with themselves then why not? If they are comfortable and others comment negatively about them then the others can f-off, quite frankly!

MARISA GRIMA - Stylist and Image Consultant

MARISA GRIMA - Stylist and Image Consultant malta, So, the first thing I would like to say is who were the people surveyed? Was it a convent of nuns or a monastery? Have they been living in the North Pole or deep in the Amazon jungle devoid of any human or technological contact?  It's true there are certain things that one over a certain age should usually stay away from doing, but I do not agree with these conclusions. Wearing a bikini over the age of what? True, certain sizes should wear size appropriate swimwear, but if all anyone wants is a tan and much needed vitamin D, then why not? Goatees, they are all the rage right now, and as long as it is well groomed, it suits any man. The same goes for tattoos... personally I don't like them on me, but they are pieces of living art, and I appreciate anyone who has the guts to have them done. Live and let live, freedom of expression, that is why we have a brain, so use it wisely and stop being closed minded.

JACQUES "J'ACCUSE" ZAMMIT - Lawyer and Opinion Writer

J'accuse has always taken a rather liberal line in matters personal. So with tongue firmly placed away from the cheek our answer to all three questions regarding bikinis, goatees and tattoos would simply be: live and let live.

MONIQUE CHAMBERS - Magazine Editor and Entrepreneur

MONIQUE CHAMBERS - Magazine Editor and Entrepreneur malta, About the goatie: rubbish. It's men under the age of 34 growing these big beards that I find off-putting. If it suits your face, wear a goatee. Keep it clean though and don't fiddle with it. I don't like tattoos on women and am not wild about them on men, though I have seen a few good ones: I once saw a chap in a tattooed suit of armour. I'd say if you still want a tattoo at 31 (51 if you can wait) have it. But be really really sure. And sober. As for the bikini, if she has the body, she should wear a bikini whatever the age. There are much younger women who shouldn't! Bikinis, hot pants, minis; any clothing really, should be figure appropriate before age becomes a consideration. Though if the daughter is wearing such clothing, perhaps mummy shouldn't.

  CYPRIAN CASSAR - Musician (Tenishia)

CYPRIAN CASSAR - Musician (Tenishia) malta, Obviously I can't agree with the tattoo survey conclusion. I am coming up to that age very soon and I'm sure that I will add a few more to my collection in the future. Regarding goaties, if it suits you then you should grow it. I don't believe that age has anything to do with style. It's more about how you feel and how you want to look. If you still feel that you can wear a bikini at 48 you should. People will talk behind your back anyway, so do what you want.

  SUE ROSSI - Model Agent

SUE ROSSI - Model Agent malta, There are personalities of all ages who fancy sporting a goatee and others who opt to shaving all the inconvenient hair off early in the morning. Sometimes I see men over 40 and the goatee suites them. A tattoo is a different animal from a goatee. Once done it is painful to remove so much thought has to be given to getting one done. In my opinion some tend to rush into tattooing and have regrets afterwards so I would advise thinking hard before opting for something permanent.  At the moment having tattoos is part of the fashion trend and it's an expression of art after all, however, all I can say is be careful and be objective whatever your age. As for bikinis, in my opinion certain cuts may suit some more than others depending on various aspects such as age and body shape as well as fitness. The points raised the emphasis on the presentation of one's self. One may have several opinions but I believe that much depends on the current trends and social attitudes.

  JOVEN GRECH - Musician (Tenishia)

JOVEN GRECH - Musician (Tenishia) malta, The first thing that came to my mind when reading the survey was that everyone should mind their own business and let others do what they want, but suddenly a horrific personal experience kicked me in the head and shook up a disturbing memory. It happened two years ago when walking on a beach in Ibiza. A couple in their 70s, naked, walked past me. Boobs that looked like wet socks and overhanging man parts that made me think the guy was related related to plastic man. It was an awful view. However, one can be 21 and not look good in a bikini or sporting a goatie... it's a never ending argument!

  ANTONIA MICALLEF - TV Journalist

ANTONIA MICALLEF - TV Journalist malta, Why did people object to men growing a goatie at that age? Because it makes them look older? As far as I know, it's sexy when a man looks older. Regarding the tattoos I believe everyone should be free to do what he or she wants as long as they don't hurt others. And if a woman still has a great figure, I don't find it inappropriate if she wears a bikini when she's 48 or even much older. I find it more inappropriate when much younger women wear bikinis even when they don't look good in them at all.
