  John Suda - Actor

John Suda - Actor malta, I still believe Argentina have the edge. With the likes of Messi and Higuain, they can settle a match at any time. However, I wish the Dutch better luck against them. They may very well win it for the first time this year.

Christian Micallef - Sports journalist malta, I was very impressed with the Netherlands and Van Gaal's intelligent tactics. They possess some of the world's best talents who are perfectly  capable of leading their country to glory.

John Mintoff - National Team footballer

John Mintoff - National Team footballer malta, I'd go for Brazil. Although they still haven't shown their full potential I still feel they have the edge over the other teams. The home crowd is definitely their 12th player too.

Ian Lang - 897 Bay radio programme manager

Ian Lang - 897 Bay radio programme manager malta, I would love to see Holland winning it this time round. Having lost three finals I think it's their due, and being a United fan, that would be a great start to the new season with a World Cup-winning manager in Louis Van Gaal! I l ove the way they play creative football and one place I’d like to be if they were to win it is Dam Square in Amsterdam... Bring on a sea of orange!

  Mikhail Basmadjian - Actor

Mikhail Basmadjian - Actor malta, I would say it would be either Germany or Holland as their football appears superior and they are more resilient. Unfortunately Brazil is in a very precarious position due to Neymar’s injury and Thiago Silva’s immediate suspension. Normally I would say Brazil, but the team  will not be operating at its full potential. However, playing on home soil and cheered on by the home crowd at this stage of the competition miracles CAN HAPPEN! And we love elephants… why does Scolari look like one?

  Paul Giordimaina - Musician

Paul Giordimaina - Musician malta, The German team has great perseverance and keep-on-fighting spirit which I believe is their forte but It won't be easy as the Brazilians will have the whole stadium behind them. I hope the ref will play fair!

James Calvert - Sunday Times of Malta sports columnist

James Calvert - Sunday Times of Malta sports columnist malta, Considering my track record in making predictions, the only sensible thing to do would be take my tip and then spread your money evenly on the other three. Having said that, I went with Brazil from the word go and I still think they will win. Losing Neymar was a blow but sometimes when a team loses its star it can actually have a positive effect on the remaining players who raise their game accordingly. One thing is for certain, whichever of these four teams do end up lifting the trophy, they will not go down in history as a brilliant champions, just adequate ones.

Brian Psaila - Committee member of the Bayern Munich Fan Club Malta malta, I think Germany will win it this time. Finally a European team will win in South America. I admit they don't have the best 11 individuals but they do have the best all-round squad.

Sarah Puntan-Galea - former Sky Sports football journalist

Sarah Puntan-Galea - former Sky Sports football journalist malta, And then there were four!

‘Who will win the World Cup?’, SWAG asked a not-so-interested-now-England-has-been-knocked-out me.

Hmmm… as is the nature of any sport at international level, you can know the game, the teams, and make an accurate prediction, but if a team’s best player is injured on match day, or their opponents are gifted the crowd’s support, any prediction can be shattered.

My advice would be to stay safe: stick your euros on an all-South American final with Brazil being victorious on the 13th. Their pressure to win on home soil, plus the emotion of their supporters could propel them to victory if they can batter down the steadfast Germans tonight.

However, that could be easier to write than achieve with Brazil not playing their best team in recent history, and losing Neymar not ideal. Unlike Germany who are playing a group of match-hardened, strategically reliable players, many of whom wear Bayern Munich shirts. As a former goalie myself, Neuer may well save the goal that wins not just the semis but the ultimate title itself. For me, he has been one of THE players of the tournament.

Many people would say Messi has been, and he could well be Argentina’s winning formula if they beat the Netherlands tomorrow. But the Netherlands should not be written off either, especially because Van Gaal will want to prove himself before heading to Old Trafford.

Ultimately, my prediction for gold will be Brazil if they can beat Germany, with a final that will see the Netherlands being left in their wake, or a higher-energy game against Argentina. If Germany get through and meet the Netherlands then Germany will win in a less nail-biting fixture; if they meet Argentina then the latter’s more creative play could pitch them to the post in a sexier match for the spectators.

But nowadays I am a diplomat and aware there is more hanging on this competition than just a sporting title: so for Brazil/the Brazilians’ sake, I am praying they win because they have much more to lose than just a match if they don’t.
