FATHER'S DAY - HE GAVE YOU LIFE, YOU GIVE HIM PRESENTS

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day? The debate about its origins can be compared to the ancient squabble between the Russians and the Poles about who invented Vodka (it was the Poles). SWAG investigates where this day came from, and, as a bonus, suggests some weird and wonderful things you can buy your good old Pa.

The Americans claim that they came up with the idea of Father’s Day, as they do with everything. They claim to have started celebrating it in the early 1900s. However, scholars have noted that the idea of Father’s Day dates back all the way to the time of the Babylonians. For those of you who failed history, that’s over four thousand years ago. Legend goes that a boy carved a message of prosperity onto a slab of clay for his father. The story pretty much ends there, which is rather anticlimactic.

So it looks like we’ve got to give it to the Americans this time. Just to make things interesting, there are two versions of how it started. The first story takes us to West Virginia. The year is 1908 and a deadly mine explosion has recently killed 361 men. Grace Golden Clayton organises a mass in remembrance of the deceased men. This is said to have inspired Father’s Day.

The second story begins in 1909, when Sonora Smart Dodd was sitting in on a Mother’s Day service in Washington. It occurred to her that women seem to get all the attention, and that her hardworking widower father deserved just as much praise. She campaigned to organise a celebration for fathers, which was held on the 19th of June. The celebration gained popularity over the years, and eventually, in 1972, President Nixon officially recognised the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Today, a majority of countries, including Malta of course, celebrate Father’s Day at this time of year.

All around the world, regardless of the day when it’s celebrated, from the USA and Italy, to India and Ecuador, it seems like food and ties are always on the gift list. But if you want to be original, you could try to get a permit to close down Triq Gorg Borg Oliver in St Julian’s and organise a Father’s Day parade with floats and balloons. That’s the Spinola promenade, for those who failed their geography. Or what about buying a Borat mankini, or miracle hair growth products from that bald fellow with the strange accent on TV?

If they're not really your dad's style, then take a look at the following handy products.

The Google Chromecast – “Chromecast is a thumb-sized media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your TV. Set it up with a simple mobile app, then send your favourite online shows, movies, music and more to your TV using your smartphone, tablet or laptop”.   Of course, this is not the kind of thing to get your dad if he's an old fashioned technophobe. Check it out here.

The Grillbot – “The world’s first automatic grill cleaning robot! Simply place the Grillbot on your grill, press a button and you’re done! The Grillbot does all the hard work for you. Grillbot is the easy-to-use, fun to watch, fully automated device that easily cleans with just the push of a button”. Check it out here.

Teroforma Whiskey Stones – “Milled in Vermont by the oldest soapstone workshop in the US. Add three chilled stones to your next dram, let stand for 5 minutes and enjoy. A set of 9 soapstone beverage cubes and muslin storage bag included”. Check it out here.

The Chillsner – “Presenting the one and only in-bottle, drink-through beer chiller: Chillsner by Corkcicle. Just freeze, insert into any standard size bottled beer (9") and never suffer through another warm brew. Respect the beer. Chillsner is perfect for parties, tailgating and pretty much any occasion where beloved beers are enjoyed”. Check it out here.

If none of these put a smile on his face, then you have a very ungrateful father indeed.
